Be warned: there be spoilers below!
Not that it'll make too much of a difference. This episode is predictable and it doesn't really do anything to progress the characters or the plot of the series overall.
However, I found myself liking it much more than I liked the last few episodes. Here are the reasons why:
1) The scene in the woods where Merlin and the kid he's with are surrounded by bandits and he warns them and then they say "you don't even have a sword" and Merlin says "I don't need one." That was epic. Yes, we didn't get to see too much advanced magic, as usual with this fifth series, but at least his power was acknowledged in this awesome way. Credit for this goes to my fav writer on this show: Julian Jones. And of course Colin Morgan's awesome acting makes it the epic moment that it is.
2) There was no "almost-reveal." They're getting annoying. If you're not going to let Arthur find out that Merlin has magic then don't make us think it's about to happen.
3) A guest character that I actually liked. Yes, the story-line was predictable and it was easy to tell he was going to betray Merlin and that he wasn't actually a druid, but he was still a good character.
4) The overall feel of the episode resembled past seasons more. It reminded me of seasons 1-3, which were by far the best ones.
Overall, it was a good episode. I just wish Mordred would do something already, because we haven't seen him for a few episodes.
Finally, as we all wait for the last few episodes, I want to set a challenge for any fans who are as frustrated as I am. I've believed for a while now, that the fans could do a much better job than the writers have been doing lately.
The Great Merlin Fan Challenge
To write an episode of Merlin in which his magic is revealed. You can place it anywhere in the series. It could be in season one or season 5 or anything in between. Pick the time/place in which you think it would have fit best. Once you're done writing it:
1) Post it online somewhere. On your blog or on a fanfic website (though I'd prefer not to have to go to fanfic.net, because it used to give my computer weird viruses when I used to go there).
2) Post a link to it in a comment to this post.
3) Enjoy reading and reviewing other people's chapters/episodes.
4) I will give the best written chapters/episodes that I enjoy the most a lengthy review on this blog.
Anyone interested in offering incentives, such as banners for the winning chapters and so on, please leave a comment about it!
