Wreck it Ralph Review

World-Building: Awesome
Characterization: Great
Plot: Great

I liked Wreck-it-Ralph. I knew I would like it months ago when I saw the trailer and now having finally seen it I think it's a great movie. Perhaps not as awesome as it could have been, the concept had a lot of potential, but it was still a great little nostalgic movie. The world-building was the best aspect of it; it's something of a tribute to all those old video-games we played and loved back in the day.

Ralph is the antagonist of his game, but he's tired of being the bad-guy, being hated and ignored, and living in the garbage dump. He starts off by going to a bad-guy support group where all the bad guys from several games get together to talk about why it's ok to be the bad-guy and so forth. Ralph shocks them by saying he doesn't want to be the bad-guy anymore. My favorite thing about this scene is all their reactions to this, which are reminiscent of those old games like pac-man.

In the end Ralph decides to go off to other games and win himself a medal, something that he hopes will make him more appreciated by the "nicelanders," the regular inhabitants of his game. In his search for the medal he sees very different types of games and meets some friends, including an annoying little kid, Venelope, who is going through something similar to his predicament as the glitch of her own game. Venelope's character is great, I just wish they didn't include so many poop jokes in her scenes.

At one point during the movie I felt a little bored with the world of Sugar Rush - Venelope's game - and wished that they would go to more worlds/games, if only for a little while, but overall the story came together well. It also provided a good sketch of bullying and how painful it can be to be the victim of it. Ralph and Venelope are examples of victims of bullying and the hero of Ralph's game: Fix-it-Felix also gets a small taste of what it feels like to be ignored and unappreciated when he ventures out of the game to look for Ralph.

Overall, I would recommend this movie. It's a light film that will be very enjoyable for those who spent their childhood playing arcade games. It will also be fun for children whose lives are so saturated with technology that they will take in stride and appreciate the look back.
