This was another highly enjoyable season with David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor. See the reviews for Season 1 (2005) and Season 2(2006).
THIS REVIEW WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR SEASON 1 (2005), SEASON 2(2006) AND THE CHRISTMAS SPECIALS CHRISTMAS INVASION AND THE RUNAWAY BRIDE.
World-Building: Great
Characterization: Awesome
Plot: Excellent plots, except for the 3-part finale
In this season the Doctor, and the audience, has to deal with Rose's absence and get accustomed to a new companion aboard the TARDIS and Martha Jones was absolutely excellent. The season introduced her well in the first episode "Smith and Jones", showing us her point of view as well as the Doctor's this season. If it weren't some of the excellent/not to be missed episodes in the first two seasons I would almost say that you could start watching doctor who with the beginning of this season.
Season 3 has excellent acting from David Tennant and Freema Agyeman as well as some stellar episodes. Overall, the episodes/stories were much stronger than those in Season 2. The only thing it lacked was the good overarching series theme. It had one, but it felt very forced and where the previous two seasons ended with strong finales that tied everything together on a grand scale this third season unfortunately ended with a terrible one. I won't go on for too long about the finale, because I want this to be spoiler-free, but overall I felt cheated by it and I felt that it destroyed an otherwise excellent season.
My favorites this season were the bone chilling "Blink" and the two-parter "Human Nature/The Family of Blood" as well as the opening episode "Smith and Jones". I enjoyed all the rest, except for the three-part finale, which I would actually recommend skipping.
If you enjoyed Seasons 1 and 2 I can honestly say you're in for a treat with this season. If you're thinking of starting your doctor who experience with this season that would be a great idea, but I'd recommend going back and watching some of the better episodes from the previous seasons later.
Stay tuned for my spoilery episode by episode break down of this season, and let me know what you thought of this season in the comments section!
