Doctor Who Season 7 (2012/2013, Matt Smith) Review
World-Building: Decent
Characterization: 2D and frustrating
Plot: the "blockbuster per episode" concept boring
This was another season split into two parts over two years, but in this case they took this split farther and made each half-season quite different from the other. The other change this season is that instead of there being a plot running through the entire season the episodes of this season are all disconnected. There aren't even any two-parters here, which to me, makes no sense since the two-parters have been of a much higher quality in the past. Overall, this season's "blockbuster-per-episode" attempt did not work for me at all. I don't watch Doctor Who for blockbusters, I watch it for the things that make it unique and many of them were absent this season.
Overall, I found this season boring. Steven Moffat's characters, Amy and Rory and in the second half of the Seaoson Clara, and of course the infamous River Song, are hard to emphasize with. While it was in a large part the companion and characterizations that hooked me in the Russel T. Davies era it was the overarching plots that hooked me during seasons 5 and 6, because quite frankly I didn't care about Amy and Rory that much. So I find it very strange that Moffat decided to completely get rid of the overarching plot and go with single separate episodes instead.
Clara was better than Amy Pond in my personal opinion, but the mystery surrounding her character didn't quite do it for me.
Overall, I found this season to be disappointing, so I won't go on for too long in case I rant. Overall, I will say that I am now hoping for a different show-runner and a different doctor. I liked Matt Smith at first, but instead of growing on me he's growing more and more annoying with each episode.
I'm looking forward to the 50th anniversary special and really hoping that it puts behind us the disappointment of this season.
