It's been all about Doctor Who lately hasn't it. Will attempt to remedy that if I can help it, but for now...
Everyone's raving about how "exquisite" and perfect this trailer is, and how it's jam packed with awesomeness. Let's be serious, guys, they starved us of anything for months and didn't let the Comic Con trailer get out online and now... this?
I mean, the still-shots look nice and I like how they started with the policeman and went on from there. I also liked how they colored some of the classic who images, but that's all it really was: images. Still shots. No action, no hint of what's actually going to happen in the episode. Nothing. Sure, it's nice that some beloved characters or cool monsters or old versions of the sonic screwdriver or whatever were floating around, but I could have found images of those on google if I wanted to look at them. What has this trailer given us that's new?
Really, the only thing that's not static in this trailer is Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor saying vague pointless things about it all coming down to one day and so forth. And then he smilingly points his sonic screwdriver up towards the sky. I've never been very impressed with Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor to begin with, but I don't hate him. What I hated about this so-called "trailer" is the things they made him say.
It doesn't always have to come down to one epic date, or one epic person (who ends up being annoying coughriversongcough)or one "mystery" (Clara) or one anything. The series has been going on for 50 years and what Moffat doesn't seem to realize is that it didn't go on for this long and win over so many fans because each event/person/episode/monster was shoved down our throats constantly as being "the one" the best, the most mysterious, the most whatever. It's been going on this long with so many fans because the stories are meaningful and fun and creative and there's a great capacity for change.
What I'm seeing in this trailer is just one more example of how Moffat's direction has led Doctor Who into a rut of self-important sameness day in and day out. It seems that there's one thing from Moffat's run that's definitely made it into the 50th Anniversary special: we're going to be treated to another outing in "this is the most epic thing ever" land. Hint: if you keep telling us it's the most epic thing ever episode after episode after episode chances are it ends up being the most non-epic thing ever.
Ok, I wasn't supposed to rant about Moffat, but this really is the disappointing feeling I got while watching the "trailer." My point is, I don't think you can consider this a trailer. It doesn't give us any hints into the actual plot of the 50th and while secrecy is nice, it's also a smart idea to tease your audience with a few seconds of actual footage from your episode/movie once in a while.
So I have to say, I still prefer the fanmade John Smith version over this official "trailer."
(Unfortunately, the original poster John Smith took his original trailer off and put up a "re-edit" which I don't like as much, so I've had to link from someone else's channel.)
What do you think? Did you feel the same way I did or are you happy with this trailer? Let me know by leaving a comment below!
