As you may know a new trailer for the Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug has recently come out and it is full of spoilery fun. This review will also contain SPOILERS for the trailer and also for the movie if you have not read the book (which you really should go do right away!) so proceed at your own risk.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Here is the trailer so you can watch if before proceeding to my review.
What I like about this trailer is that it gives us a little bit more time with some of the key characters. Mostly, we see more of Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin and Bard the Bowman. We also get a glimpse of Legolas and Tauriel and Thranduil - the elvenking and Legolas' father. The best part of the trailer, however, is Smaug. We don't see much of him, still, and I completely agree with that choice because it adds to the mystery and makes him seem scarier, but we do hear his voice and it is awesomely frightening.
Here are the few thoughts I had on the trailer. As I said, watch it first so you know what I'm talking about.
1) Bard the Bowman is AMAZING! We only got a tiny glimpse of him last time, but this time we get to see him facing off with Thorin and telling him he can't go into the mountain because it'll bring Smaug's wrath upon them all. In short, awesome.
2) Martin Freeman does an amazing job showing us how frightened Bilbo is in his encounter with Smaug.
3) Smaug's voice is absolutely perfect. He's frightening and it really works as the voice of a dragon. I must say, though, I liked the first part where it was clearly Cumberbatch's own voice, but in the very end of the trailer it seemed to be a bit altered and I didn't like it as much. Hopefully, they don't play around with his voice too much in the movie.
4) I'm a little worried by Thranduil's line "we will help you"... so does he promise to help and then trick them? That's what the trailer makes it seem like! I prefer the open hostility from the start that I expected based on the book. I hope they haven't changed it too much.
5) Now we have proof that Tauriel will be Legolas' love interest, with Thranduil telling her not to give Legolas hope where there isn't any... *sigh* Couldn't she just be an awesome elf without any love stories involved?
6) The mini-scene where Bilbo almost tells Gandalf about the ring is excellent.
7) The trailer makes it clear that the relationship between Thorin and Bilbo is still tense, which is as it should be. If they play this right the tension between the two will remain a running theme throughout the three movies without being laid on too thick.
I think it's a great trailer and promises an excellent film. Comment below, let me know your thoughts on the trailer!
