Doctor Who 812: Death In Heaven

A disappointing end to a season that looked like it was improving the show...

MASSIVE SPOILERS AHEAD

World-Building: Shoddy

Characterization: 2D, the 'emotional' bits fall flat
Plot: riddled with holes

By this point I'm used to Moffat not giving answers for things the fans want to know so things like the fact that GUS remained unexplained and so on didn't really bother me. I wasn't really looking for resolution to anything, I just wanted this episode to be a decent stand-alone and maybe have something to do with the first part "Dark Water." That's not asking for much, right? Unfortunately even that seems to be too much to ask of Moffat these days.

As I watched I became increasingly annoyed with the ridiculous things I was seeing. It was like a constant stream of "oh, great, this now" thoughts running through my head as I watched:

1- "Really? Selfies with Cybermen?"

2- Aaaaaand, Clara's trying to convince us that she's the doctor. There's never been a Clara Oswald. Blablabla. The sad part is that I was actually hoping this would be true (even though it was quite obvious it wasn't) because at least that would explain some of Clara's special powers, like being able to snap the TARDIS door open, and all the rest of it.

3- UNIT randomly show up out of nowhere. Of course. We can't have a finale without random boring characters that we don't want to see popping up out of nowhere.

4- Great, sinister rain.

When it got to the sinister rain complete with its own musical score I was very tempted to just turn it off. I wanted to finish though, so that when I complain people don't go "you didn't even watch the whole episode." So yeah, I finished. Not impressed.

People complain about the Brigadier's cameo as a cyberman, about the stupid stupid stupid plot point that the story hinged on - Danny still loves Clara even though he's had his emotions deleted/suppressed and this somehow makes him resist being a real cyberman and following Missy's orders even though the thousands of millions of other dead people must have had loved ones as well... there have been detailed mentions of all the annoying references to past episodes and the stupid "squee" thing.  I've seen comments and reviews online that have mentioned pretty much everything that's wrong with this episode - all except one thing that really made me angry.

I haven't exactly been impressed with Missy so far this season. Her scenes were tacked on at the ends of episodes without properly fitting in to the storyline. In episode 811 "Dark Water" she randomly jumped on the doctor and kissed him and she seemed to be in love with him. She also seemed insane. It was like River Song all over again. In "Dark Water" she was also kind of channeling Moriarty from Sherlock as I mentioned in my Dark Water Review, but what Moffat did to her in this episode was just horrible. I had zero problem with the Master being a female. In fact, I've said before on this blog that I'd like for the Doctor to be Maggie Smith! What I do have a problem with is Moffat's way of writing women and unfortunately, Missy didn't escape from it.

At the end of this episode in the graveyard Missy suddenly put the cyberman-control bracelet on the Doctor's wrist and actually bowed to him and revealed that her entire plan was to give him control of the universe. I cringed. It was at this point that I understood why Moffat had turned the Master into a woman. So that she could do this - make this "gesture" and give the doctor the "birthday present" of making him control the world. For some reason, Moffat couldn't picture a male Master doing this so he just turned the master into a woman. There are so many things wrong with this I can't even begin to express it. And again I'd like to repeat what I said in my Dark Water Review: why does every female character Moffat writes just want to kiss the Doctor?

Of course after all this we get hit with the Santa Claus appearance. That scene alone spoiled the entire Christmas Special. With Santa's help they're going to get Danny back. Poor man. He's had to suffer a lot this season and I fully expect Moffat to continue to make him suffer after he's brought back to life in the Christmas episode.

Moffat needs to go.
